AI in Education for Sustainability: Friend, Coach, or Trap?

August 11, 2025 Marian Constantin

We’re living in a world where technology changes faster than the latest social media trend. And right there, riding the tech wave, is Artificial Intelligence (AI) — a tool that’s showing up more and more in schools.

One of the coolest things AI can do? Help you write! Whether you’re working on a school essay, a blog post, or even a fancy report, AI can whip up something fast, clear, and in the style you need. But here’s the deal: like any super-powerful tool, it can help you a lot… or trip you up if you’re not careful.

AI as Your Idea Booster: Got a few ideas in your head but no clue how to turn them into a full paragraph? AI can take your rough thoughts and turn them into smooth, logical, and well-written text. It’s kind of like having a super-speedy “writing assistant” who types out your ideas in record time. Perfect when you know what you want to say but you’re short on time (or patience).

AI as Your Writing Coach: Already have a draft? AI can polish it up for you. It can make your writing clearer, fix little mistakes, and even suggest better ways to say something. Think of it as a 24/7 writing coach — no coffee breaks needed.

The Risk: Losing Your Voice: Here’s the sneaky downside: if you let AI do all the writing for you, you might stop practicing your own skills. Writing is like a muscle — if you don’t use it, it gets weaker. You might even end up stuck in an “AI bubble,” where everything you write sounds the same… and not like you.

How to Use AI the Smart Way

Using AI well is a lot like caring for the planet — it’s all about balance. Here’s how to keep things healthy:

Let AI help, don’t let it take over. Start with your own ideas, then let AI build on them.

Add your personality. Mix in your own examples, jokes, or experiences.

Write without AI sometimes. Keep your brain muscles strong by creating stuff completely on your own.

Stay sharp. AI learns from the internet, and the internet isn’t perfect. Always check what it gives you.

The Big Lesson

AI can be awesome for learning and creativity — even for topics like sustainability. But just like you wouldn’t build a forest out of plastic trees, you can’t grow your unique style if you only use AI. The secret is to team up: your creativity + AI’s speed = the best of both worlds.
