The European Commission’s Horizon Magazine has published an article highlighting the achievements and impact of the ECF4CLIM project, a Horizon Europe initiative aimed at promoting sustainability through education
The article, “Planting the Seeds of Sustainability Through Education“, showcases how schools and universities across Europe have transformed classrooms into living laboratories for sustainability, engaging students, teachers and local communities in practical actions ranging from energy monitoring and waste reduction to biodiversity projects and sustainable consumption initiatives.
Coordinated by CIEMAT, ECF4CLIM developed an innovative approach combining citizen science and participatory research to empower educational communities to design, implement and evaluate sustainability actions. Over four years, the project involved 13 schools and universities, 10 research organisations and around 1,300 participants across Finland, Portugal, Romania and Spain.
One of the project’s key outcomes is the ECF4CLIM Roadmap, a practical framework that helps educational institutions integrate sustainability into everyday practices and build the collective capacities needed to drive long-term change.
The publication highlights the importance of participatory approaches, collective action and shared responsibility in advancing sustainability. It also reinforces the role that schools and universities can play as catalysts for environmental and social transformation, helping prepare future generations to address complex sustainability challenges.
The article is available on Horizon Magazine and offers an overview of how ECF4CLIM has contributed to advancing sustainability education across Europe.
